Encouraging Teens to Participate in Family Time
For more than three decades, Mark Spatz has handled personal injury claims for two Fort Lauderdale, FL legal firms. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the charitable organization Golden Parents, Inc, which offers workshops on parenting skills to parents from lower-income backgrounds. Mark Spatz places heavy importance on family time, which is an important source of bonding for children of all ages, including teenagers.
While it may be more difficult to convince teenagers to participate in family activities, those who frequently spend quality time with their family are less likely to engage in risky behaviors and have a stronger sense of well-being. Parents can make family time more appealing to their older children by involving them in the planning process and making time for their interests.
In families where there are large age-differences between the children, parents should only request that their teens participate in age-appropriate activities. This prevents teens from developing a negative view of family time. Simple routine activities, such as painting the house, gardening, or setting up newly-purchased furniture can also be great ways to bond with older children.
